What is a key? Most of us picture a small metal object that unlocks a door, but keys take many forms.

Keys can symbolise both locking and unlocking, letting in and shutting out, but equally can symbolise being neither here nor there, locked in nor locked out, being in the dark and in on the secret. A key is a liminal object by design. It symbolises the threshold of something or somewhere.

Keys are not politically neutral. Looking at this archetype queerly invites us to ask who controls access, who decides who may enter, and who is permitted to possess knowledge in the first place.
